Chutney

Chutneys originated in India (where they were called chatni) being relishes made from fresh fruit and spices. During the colonial era the British brought them home (along with curry dishes) and took them to their other colonies, including South Africa and the Caribbean Islands. Not surprisingly, during this long journey the concept was adapted, finally emerging as a commercially made mango chutney.

Nowadays, Indian restaurants serve relishes with almost every meal. They can be fresh or cooked, and are made from a wide variety of ingredients such as mango, apples, pears, tamarind, lemon, tomato, raisins, coconut, vinegar, sugar, honey, citrus peel, garlic, mint. turmeric, cinnamon and hot chillies to name but a few!
